Dr. Deniz Eseryel is an Assistant Professor at University of Oklahoma in Instructional Psychology & Technology Program and the K20 Center for Educational and Community Renewal. Prior to her appointment at University of Oklahoma, Dr. Eseryel worked as a post-doctoral research associate at IDD&E at Syracuse University with Dr. Tiffany A. Koszalka. Dr. Eseryel earned her Ph.D. Degree at Syracuse University with specialization in Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation under the supervision of Dr. Phil Doughty, Dr. Mike Spector, and Dr. Jerry Klein. Dr. Deniz Eseryel earned her Master's Degree at the University of Twente in the Netherlands specializing in Educational & Training Systems Design under the supervision of Dr. Sanne Dijkstra and Dr. Betty Collis.

Dr. Eseryel’s research focuses on issues related to learning, problem-solving, and expertise development in complex knowledge domains such as STEM. She is also concerned with developing and evaluating new instructional approaches for advanced computer-based learning environments to facilitate development of complex learning and problem-solving outcomes. Towards this direction, she applies cognitive theories to educational practice, and uses evaluations of instructional processes and outcomes to illuminate further development of cognitive and instructional theories. Dr. Eseryel’s recent work included development of a methodology for assessing complex learning outcomes and for benchmarking levels of expertise development in complex knowledge domains. In addition, she developed a framework for designing and implementing advanced learning environments, such as dynamic system modelling platforms, simulations, virtual (synthetic) worlds, and massively multiplayer online games to facilitate complex learning, ill-structured problem solving, and metacognitive skills.  Dr. Eseryel’s research is recognized by four awards: 2010 Young Researcher Award by the American Educational Research Association Instructional Technology Special Interest Group; 2009 Design & Development Showcase Award by the Association of Educational Communications and Technology; 2006 Outstanding Dissertation Research Award by Syracuse University and 2000 International Scholar Honor, by Phi Beta Delta. Dr. Eseryel serves on the editorial boards for the International Journal of Mobile Learning & Organization and for the International Journal of Knowledge & Learning. She also serves as a board member for the Design and Development Division of the Association of Educational Communications & Technology and for the Instructional Technology Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association.
